A curious toddler who unscrewed a cover and drank from a bottle of hairspray died at the San Fernando General Hospital last week.
Little Tyrique Scipio was playing with the bottle in a bedroom at his mother's home at Emerald Drive, Couva, when he drank the liquid last Wednesday. He died two days later.
Tyrique was 21 months old and his mother, Kimberly Tyson, had already made plans for his second birthday in August.
His grandmother, Yvonne Scipio, said yesterday her grandson was a bundle of joy.
"He was a happy child who was always laughing. He started walking at an early age and was just learning to talk," she said.
Scipio said Tyrique and his brother, Tyrelle, 5, lived with their mother. The children's father, Stephan Scipio, 24, lives with his parents at Simpson Browne Terrace, Cocoyea.
Scipio said her son, who is employed with the Ministry of Works and Transport, was devastated by the child's death.
"No one is taking this easy, the child was smart and growing well," she said.
According to medical literature, there are six chemicals contained in hairspray considered poisonous, and it can do extensive damage to the digestive tract if swallowed, and lead to death in young children depending on the amount ingested.
The family was making funeral arrangements yesterday. A report was filed at the Couva Police Station. -Carolyn Kissoon
