Newsday By STACY MOORE Wednesday, November 23 2011

Chandradath Ramsaroop, 55, of Sewlal Trace, Fyzabad died instantly after the wheel of a trailer truck rolled over his head. Ramsaroop was employed with the Inland and Offshore Company Ltd (IOCL) located at South Oroupouche. According to reports, the incident occurred shortly after midday. Reports said Ramsaroop was in the process of securing pipes on a truck when he fell off, landed on the ground and was run over by another truck which was reversing.

“They said the truck passed over his head and squashed it as he lay on the floor,” wept Ramsaroop’s brother Nandlal, 42.

Speaking to Newsday at the family home, Nandlal said he did not wish to pass blame as he believes it was an accident. But he is of the view the accident could have been prevented.

“My brother’s death could have been prevented if the proper safety procedures were followed. If you have a lorry man... as a truck driver you are supposed to make sure he is safe before you decide to pull out. It is part of the safety rules, everyone knows that,” Nandlal said.

“Sorry would not bring back my brother. I accept the sympathy but sorry would not bring him back,” he said. Ramsaroop had been working with the company for the past seven months and was in the process of refurbishing his home for his family for Christmas.

“He worked day and night to provide for his family. And he would put aside money to buy materials for the house,” Ramsaroop’s wife Indira, 38, sobbed. She described her husband as a dedicated and loving father.

“He loved his children so much and he did everything to make them happy, ”Indira said wiping the tears from her eyes.

As the grieving mother spoke, the cries of one of their younger children 13-year-old Ria echoed throughout the house. She was consoled by her sister Priya, 21, and other relatives. The grieving girl told Newsday she last spoke to her father before he left for work. “I told him goodbye,” she muttered. Priya said she had been looking forward to spending her birthday with her father next week. “He would not be there for my birthday,” she said.
